Going back to my textile roots by Katie Mitchell
Published on Thursday 24th May
Our pop-up florist Just So Flowers currently has some beautiful plant-hangers for sale which were handmade by local textile designer Katie Mitchell. Their clean, simple design and strong on-trend colours are proving very popular with our customers. Here Katie explains how her business began and who inspired her to go back to her textile roots.
I have always loved designing and making, inspired by my mum who set up her own soft furnishing business when I was a teenager. I studied textile design at university and then went on to work for 10 years as a visual merchandiser for several high street interior and fashion brands.
Since having my own children, I decided the time was right to go back to my textile roots, and, like my mum, fulfil my dream of running my own business and realise my passion for interiors and fashion.
By-Me began when I joined a mums' craft group after moving to South East London. There, I met some inspirational mothers who had set up amazing creative businesses from home and this gave me the confidence to strike out on my own.
I run my business creating macrame plant hangers/wallhangings and bespoke projects (one being a giant dream catcher!) from my home in southeast London. My work has always been influenced by my love of traditional crafts, handmade textiles, fashion, eclectic interiors and Scandinavian design.
I also teach workshops at home and in selected venues. If you are interested to know more please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org You can also find me on facebook and instagram @by_me_katie and visit my website: by-me.london
You can also buy Katie's plant hangers at our pop-up florist Just So Flowers, currently popping up at The Archie Parker Cafe, 55c Dartmouth Rd, Forest Hill, every weekend.
